A scientist named Galan created a ship to try to find a way to save the universe. As the universe began to fall into the Big Crunch, Galen was offered the chance to merge with the Sentience of the Universe. In the process, he became the only survivor of his universe and came over to the new universe that formed from the Big Bang. Cocooned in a Cosmic Egg, Galen spent billions of years growing until the egg hatched and he came out as Galactus. With his rebirth came the hunger for planets that became his trademark.
Galactus is thought of by many races of the universe as an existential threat, a danger to all life, and one that must be destroyed. At one point, the universe got its wish when Galactus was actually killed but they quickly discovered the universe needed him. In the miniseries Galactus the Devourer Louise Simonson, John Buscema , the Silver Surfer turned Galactus' own consuming machines against him, starving the Devourer of Worlds and causing him to die and turn into a star.
However, it turned out Galactus' existence was the only thing keeping Abraxas the personification of the destruction of universes under control. Abraxas was released to wreak havoc on multiple universes and was so destructive that Franklin Richards and Valeria Von Doom had to use their cosmic powers to bring Galactus back to life to stop him. With Galactus' help, Abraxas was stopped and Mr. Fantastic used the Ultimate Nullifier to reset reality and keep the destruction entity from escaping in the first place.
Later on, Mr. Fantastic was put on trial and blamed for all the deaths caused by Galactus returning to life, but Eternity himself appeared to insist that Galactus maintained the balance between life and death in the multiverse. Galactus wields the Power Cosmic, which allows him to have god-like powers.
He can transform matter, control minds, create force fields, and uses technology so advanced that we can't even comprehend it. His armor is almost impenetrable, and he's brushed aside the combined forces of entire planets without even a scratch. Is there anything that could kill Galactus? Actually, he is vulnerable to a few things and one of them is the Ultimate Nullifier.
There's only one thing that could inspire fear in the mighty Galactus, and that was revealed in 's Fantastic Four 50 by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. In the story, Galactus wreaked havoc in his endless quest to consume the Earth. To stop him, Uatu the Watcher told Johnny Storm to go aboard Galactus' world-sized spaceship Taa II and steal an object so dangerous that Galactus kept it to protect himself from it: the Ultimate Nullifier.
The Ultimate Nullifier is the most powerful weapon in existence, armed with the ability to completely destroy anything the weapon is used in. It's so powerful that it can even destroy entire timelines. When Mr. Fantastic threatened to use the Ultimate Nullifier to destroy Galactus, the Devourer of Worlds backed down. How does Galactus deal with the idea that he's responsible for the deaths of billions of intelligent life forms?
To be honest, not too badly. He thinks of himself as above all living things and is less interested in the survival of other sentient life than your average McDonald's customer is concerned about the cow that made his Big Mac. However, he does want to be free of the constant need to devour planets. That has been his weakness many times as he's desperate to stop the endless quest for finding worlds he can eat. At one point, he came up with a plan to cure himself by consuming the power of the combined Infinity Gems.
In 's Thanos 4 by Jim Starlin, Galactus assembled the powerful Infinity Gems, only to discover he had been manipulated by an extra-dimensional force called Hunger. Hunger was the multiverse equivalent of Galactus, consuming entire realities instead of just planets.
The entity had given Galactus the idea and the means to combine the gems in a way that would release him. With the Infinity Gems combined with Galactus' machines, a portal was opened that let the parasite into the dimension.
It took the power of Thanos to destroy the portal into our world and scatter the Infinity Gems across the universe, leaving Hunger out in the cold. There are those who dream of Galactus' death to save the universe from his endless hunger, but the Silver Surfer isn't one of them. Silver Surfer was Galactus' herald for many years, and the two formed a close but uneasy bond. Fantastic admitted the truth from an earlier adventure where they discovered a future Earth where the population of a dying Earth needed a way to escape to the present.
The heroes of that future hatched a plan to trap Galactus and lobotomize him so they could use his body to power a time machine as the Galactus Engine. The plan worked, and the people of Earth were sent to a planet in the present called Nu-World. When he found the truth, Galactus traveled to Nu-World to find it powered by his corpse and in anger, Galactus destroyed Nu-World.
Too bad he didn't see the irony in the whole situation. Since the beginning of his existence, Galactus has craved other planets to devour to feed his endless hunger.
However, not just any planet will do. He searches the universe for planets with the right mix of energy for him to feed on; the more, the better. His search has led him to turn other beings into "heralds" who travel the universe ahead of Galactus, hunting for planets he can't find on his own. Yet in all that searching, it seems there's one planet that he wants more than any other, and that's Earth.
You just have to open your eyes -- no Heralds needed. If we accepted the quoted inconsistency as a fact, we would have to conclude that Galactus IS evil, and kills billions of sentient beings just for funsies. Which of course makes no sense. Inefficiency is not a way to explain it away, either: if, nutrition-wise, "a billion years worth of the sun's energy" equals one planetary biosphere, there would still be enough non-inhabited solar systems in the universe to feed Galactus almost forever.
No, having Galactus eat solar energy is poor writing, showing lack of research about the character and his established canon, and the logic behind that canon. I'd rather stick to the logical, consistent, and well-established canon and ignore this one inconsistency. Him devouring stars also makes no sense with his earlier history and the point of the character. Time and time again in the comic history we have seen a starving "Galactus Hungers! This while he has been surrounded by stars and rocky planetary systems without life on them.
He cannot use those as energy source, otherwise he would have done so in critical moments when he is nearly dying to hunger. No, Galactus eating stars is one thing I won't just accept as a retcon, because the retcon would lead to too many logical contradictions. It is a recent writer error showing cluelessness about the character, and should be treated as such and ignored.

Exactly, that would be the simplest explanation. He no doubt has energy absorption abilities at least that of the Surfer, but probably the energy is of no use sustaining him. I think he also absorbed the Prime Director of Galador who was an energy being, but that probably counts as living energy.

So if he comes across mature stars with no planets he may as well eat the star anyway since it would be unlikely to get planets later on.
Leave the other systems to ripen for the more juicy planets. Also, if he takes the planets why not absorb the system's sun every single time for the extra energy? I'd tend to agree here. One or two writers come along and make a simple but important plot mistake that contradicts previous continuity and messes with the established internal logic in an annoying way. That's Marvel though. Of course, there was also that incident where he gave up on Wraithworld and tried to absorb the entire Black Sun.
But maybe he was just doing it to attempt to neutralize the Wraithworld defenses at the source of their power, or he sensed the Black Sun was not a normal star and also harbored living energy it was producing Deathwings and the whole system seemed to have a kind of malevolent sentience. TheLordofMurder basilisk Thats why they should base Galactus's eatting habits around Carbon; most stars and star systems are Carbon poor and wouldnt do much for him That would neatly explain the need for Heralds there are ALOT of star systems to weed out and add some logic in the process to why he does what he does In-fact one comic explores this exact situation.
Because of the importance of Galactus in the cosmic balance of the Universe, he keeps Galactus alive and becomes the one who sends Galactus on his path to consume his first planet.
So is Galactus a villain? No, Galactus isn't actually a villain. Although he does play his part as a villain in many issues of the comic, the character itself is more a cosmic force of the universe. Think of it no different than a black hole in space consuming everything it touches. Galactus does not consume planets out of hate, love, vengeance, grief, anger, or any emotion. He simply consumes to live. How can one consider that the trait of a villain?
Galactus is also expected to appear in upcoming MCU movies over the next few years. It will be interesting to see how they portray the character in film. What do you think? The Living Tribunal ruled in Galactus' favor, allowing him to remain as his new self, alleging that the cosmic hierarchy in this new reality was still being formed, thus it wasn't set. Lord Chaos and Master Order took this council to heart, and assaulted the Living Tribunal, killing him.
However, the same principle that made it possible for them to murder the Tribunal, that there wasn't a hierarchy yet, meant they couldn't impose their will on Galactus, as he was on the same level as Order and Chaos.
Order and Chaos left the Superflow, leaving a weakened Galactus trapped behind, and merged into a new more powerful being, Logos. At the same time, the Maker foolishly used the High Evolutionary 's technology to bring down the Superflow in an attempt to unify the Multiverse into a single reality and strengthen Eternity. When this process proved to be counterproductive and actually began to damage Eternity even further, Galactus had the ghost of the Shaper of Worlds teleport the Ultimates to the High Evolutionary's Counter-Earth.
Galactus and the Eternity Watch subsequently resumed their confrontation against the agents of the First Firmament. With the help of Black Panther 's ascended astral form and the rebirthed Celestials, the Eternity Watch defeated the Aspirants and Logos.
The First Firmament was also defeated, when Eternity summoned the past incarnations of the Multiverse to his aid, the Ultimate Ultimates. With Eternity free and safe once again, Galactus bid the Ultimates farewell, and they parted their ways.
With Ultron about to launch rockets from Saiph to infect the universe into his image through the Ultron Virus and the Soul Gem , the Silver Surfer approached Galactus and asked him to destroy the planet in order to save the galaxy.
When Galactus went to the Zaraxians ' homeworld in order to consume it, the magically -powered race had captured Silver Surfer and after seeing through his memories they sent their most powerful magician, Zoloz , to Earth in order to find a way and defeat Galactus.
Strange then convinced Galactus to lead him to a safe planet to consume, and not being affected. When the Black Winter , the entity which destroyed Galactus' universe, returned, an injured Galactus went to Asgard , crashing on it, while Thor attacked him. Upon awakening, Galactus revealed that when he looked at the Black Winter the second time he saw Thor, meaning that the God of Thunder was to be his death.
He turned the Asgardian into his new herald and begun consuming the five planets needing to empower Galactus enough to defeat the Black Winter. When Galactus incredulously attempted to attack him, Thor sentenced him to death for the countless planets he had destroyed and drained him of the Power Cosmic, leaving him on the brink of death.
The Black Winter attempted to take Galactus, but Thor used his desiccated body as a cosmic bomb to destroy it; taking Galactus' helmet to use as an entranceway to his throne room. Cosmic Entity: Galactus possesses the immeasurable Power Cosmic and is one of the most powerful beings in the Marvel Universe , having near-limitless godlike powers, [17] and being considered an omnipotent entity.
After devouring four planets, Galactus has been shown capable of fighting four Mad Celestials , and destroying one of them, although when they fused together into a powerful Voltron Celestial he was defeated. Galactus and his Heralds were stated to be cosmic level threats. However, although his power is great, it is dependent on the amount of energy he has absorbed from planets.
If he does not feed regularly, then it will run out, and he will weaken and starve to death. Lifebringer: After his existential nature was fundamentally changed by the Ultimates , Galactus was freed from his cosmic hunger, and came to emit life instead of consuming it. Cosmic-Genius: Galactus, as the oldest known living entity in the universe, possesses one of the universe's absolutely most advanced minds.
His scientific knowledge is beyond human understanding. The Worldship itself is a solar system-sized construct that is said to surpass any natural world in beauty and splendor and yet within it's computers is contained knowledge so unfathomable and far reaching it can grant awesome power to those who come into contact with it see Korvac. When sated, Galactus has demonstrated a solar scale of super-strength, meaning he possesses limitless strength. Cosmic Hunger: Galactus requires unknown energies obtainable only from a certain type of planets in order to sustain his life.
The suitable type of planet need not to be one where life is present, but it must have the potential to support life. When recently sated Galactus is incredibly powerful; however, the longer he goes without feeding the more his strength, power, and cosmic awareness wane. Indeed, over one month after consuming a suitable planet his power will have already been reduced exponentially, although in such a hungered state his powers are still far beyond mortal comprehension. In recent times Galactus has been known to go without feeding for numerous months at a time bringing him to the brink of death and reducing his power to such a degree that superhuman teams such as the Avengers , and the Fantastic Four etc.
Why the intervals between his feedings has decreased over the millennia is unknown. Magic : Galactus being an entity of pure science, is quite vulnerable to Magic. The alien sorcerer, Zoloz was able to banish Galactus to the Mystic Realms. Galactus often employs his Elemental Converter when devouring planets to help him in the conversion of matter into energy.
Although he does not require this device to devour planets and will forego its use in certain scenarios, it makes the conversion of energies more efficient. Galactus also wears a full-body suit of armor constructed from an unknown material of his own design that helps him to regulate and control his personal energy.
If he were to remove the armor for an extended period, his vast cosmic energies could run rampant and potentially give him the appearance of a star. Galactus often employs a robot called the Punisher , which possesses vast superhuman strength, speed, and durability; to battle adversaries whose power levels do not warrant his direct attention.
Galactus also keeps in his possession a weapon called the Ultimate Nullifier. This weapon has the ability to destroy any target the wielder can mentally envision.
In the hands of Galactus, due to his cosmic awareness, the Ultimate Nullifier is capable of destroying entire universes and even entire timelines from beginning to end. It was revealed in the Abraxas story arc that the Ultimate Nullifier may be an aspect of Galactus himself. Although Galactus is capable of space travel via his own power, he disdains the needless expenditure of power and prefers to travel in starships of his own design.
Though Galactus has many different starships in his personal fleet his preferred long range vessel is his sphere-shaped starship over a mile in diameter which is capable of trans-light speeds and inter-dimensional travel.
